Scotland schools close as part of national lockdown
Monday 4th January 2021
Schools will close for the majority of pupils until 1 February 2021 as part of a national lockdown beginning at midnight today, First Minister for Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has announced.
This includes nursery as well as primary and secondary schools, with learning taking place online instead. A review of the arrangements will take place on 18 January.
Children who need additional support for learning will be exempt from this rule, as well as vulnerable children and children of keyworkers.
From midnight tonight for the duration of January, Scotland is introducing a legal requirement to stay at home except for essential purposes - similar to the lockdown undertaken in March.
All level 4 areas will now be subject to the following:
- It is only permissible to leave your house for essential purposes - caring responsibilities, essential shopping, or being part of an extended household.
- There will be new guidance for those shielding - if you were shielding before and you cannot work from home, you will be provided with a letter enabling you to stay at home and shield
- From tomorrow a maximum of two people from up to two households can meet outside - children under the age of 12 do not count as part of this rule.
- Children under 12 are still allowed to play outside in larger groups as well.
