Parents tell us what they want from transitions information

Monday 10th February 2020

50 parents came together at our transitions event in London last Tuesday to tell us what information they need on preparing their child for adult life.

The guests heard a number of presentations about lived experiences from parent carers, young people and professionals.

The guests then moved around the tables and discussed specific topics and their experiences. In the discussion about information needs, the most common suggestions were benefits and financial help for over 16s, advice around mental capacity and deputyship, and information about residential options for disabled adults.

The groups also shared their thoughts about how they'd like to get this information. Most agreed that they wanted to find information locally about local services available for their families, as well as information through different methods such as local events for parent carers and young people, online and through social media.

We're creating lots of new advice and information for our website on preparing for adult life, and the feedback and ideas we heard at the event will make sure our information helps to meet parent's needs.
